Moving to the country and starting a farm is a popular thing to do. There’s really nothing like connecting with the soil, growing your own crops, producing your own dairy products, and living a simpler life – all of these things are the reasons why many city dwellers have started to migrate towards greener pastures, quite literally. But with a farm comes many other things that you’ll need to know about before you make the move – here are some tips from your Fort Collins movers.

1. Make a list of the things that you want from a farm property. How many acres are you looking for? Do you want a property with alternate sources of water (like a stream or river), and what size farm do you want to run?

2. Think about the type of farm you want to create. If you’re looking to run a dairy farm, you will need to buy a property with the right dairy farming setup. If you want to run a vegetable farm, good soil and lots of lush land are important factors.

3. Will you build a new farmhouse or buy an old one? If you love the idea of a rustic farmhouse, keep in mind that older homes tend to come with lots of hiccups like bad plumbing, wiring, and maybe some faulty boards or some other quirks. You can fix these things, but you might want to think about buying a home that’s a bit more modern and up to code.

4. How self-sufficient do you plan to be? Will you live off of solar power and use outhouses, or will you do things the modern way? This will help you determine what to look for when buying a home.

5. Do you need help running your farm at first? This one might be out of reach for some people, but hiring a few seasoned farmhands to help you get the hang of things isn’t a bad idea at all. In fact, it’s a wise idea because running a farm is really hard.

6. Figure out how you will make money from your farm. Assuming that you plan to live off of whatever you grow and sell, figure out a game plan for when sales slow down – like during the winter months, and try to figure out how much to save to keep you going during those months.

7. Read up on farming, or spend some time on a farm working as a farmhand before you buy that amazing property. Farming can be a lot of fun, but it’s also a lot of work!
