Moving is a hectic and crazy time. You have so much to think about and coordinate. First there’s the selection process – both the new house and community you are moving to and the Colorado moving company that will help you get your stuff there – and then comes the flood of activities essential to getting you from point A to point B.
You have to weed through your belongings so you aren’t traveling with stuff you never really use anyway. You have to decide whether to sell your items at a yard sale or donate them to Goodwill (or both!). You should make sure you get some quality time in with your friends and family that you won’t see as often anymore. And lastly the dreaded chore of packing all of your boxes, if you don’t rely on your long distance moving company to pack for you. It can be hard to remember everything you need to do, even if you have made out lists. Here are a few things you might not think of so that you don’t forget a few highly important things.
Membership Transfers
Do you belong to a gym? Do you go often? It’s time to see if your gym has a location nearby. If so, you need to transfer it! If not, you should look into the cancellation policy well in advance so that you aren’t stuck paying for a membership you can’t even use. There may be some early termination fees to contend with, so be sure to read all of the fine print and see the exact date you signed up. Sometimes waiting an extra month or two before canceling avoids these high fees.
Sit down and make a list of all of the clubs and organizations you belong to, and your kids, too – the American Legion, Girl Scouts, 4-H – and determine where the nearest location to your new home is so that you can continue your membership uninterrupted.
Your Car
No, I know you aren’t going to forget about taking your car with you, but there is something you might forget that involves your car. Sometimes, there is so much going on, we neglect to get our car all tuned up and ready to hit the road to our new home!
Not only do you need it to be tuned up and in excellent shape to drive a long distance, you should be sure to pack a first aid kit and emergency supplies, just in case. Don’t forget tissues, band aids, sunscreen, aloe vera gel, and bug spray. If it’s winter, bring along an emergency snow shovel, blankets for the whole family, flares, and anything to make sitting in the cold more bearable. You never know where or when disaster will strike – better safe than sorry!
Don’t forget to have a chat with your mechanic. They might know of someone in your new area that can be trusted to fix your car properly without charging you an arm and a leg.
Medical Considerations
Here’s another thing that many people don’t think of until they’ve already moved. It’s something that is easily forgotten, especially if you are the pillar of health and seldom visit your doctor. Before you leave for good, talk to your doctor about transferring medical records and prescriptions to your new location. You can sign all of the release forms ahead of time to make the transition as smooth as possible. They, like your mechanic, might be able to refer you to another practice in your network, too.
You might find that your health insurance plan changes. If this is the case, do your homework before you move so there is no lapse in coverage or steep bills that won’t be covered.
